Cradle of Humankind is one of the eight World Heritage Sites
situated in South Africa. Although Africa has been established as the
birthplace of humankind, this is where our original and collective umbilical
cord lies and is buried. Sterkfontein Caves is a set of limestone caves of
special interest to paleo-anthropologists as well as those interested in the
origin of humans. The Sterkfontein Caves is owned by the University of
Witswatersrand, whose scientists are responsible for the main excavations that
have taken place at the World Heritage Site. They are credited with many of the
significant discoveries in the caves such as the famous fossils named Mrs. Du
Ples and Little Foot, the latter being an almost complete Australopithecus
skeleton dating back more than 3 million years.
