Guided Constitutional Hill Johannesburg Tour
Quick Info:
Constitution Hill building is located in Johannesburg near
the western end of the suburb of Hillbrow. Discover the history of Constitution
Hill which was originally a fort built by former President Paul Kruger to
protect the Boer (White Afrikaaners) republic against the British
invasion. At this institute, you will
learn about how the Boers' military leaders and some of the students from the
Soweto Uprising were imprisoned. During the apartheid era, the fort became a
detention center until 1987 for political activists like Nelson Mandela &
Mahatma Gandhi imprisoned for their pro-democracy activism. The prison housed
activists before they were moved to notorious prisons like Robben Island. In
2004, the center opened as a Constitutional court and still has a lot of
material and memories of 200 South African artwork. Upon arrival, outside you
will discover the flame on the door symbolizing the light of democracy. The
flame was put on the light on 10 December 2011 during the celebration of the
15th Anniversary. Concluding the tour by visiting the Women’s Jail. Upon
arrival, you will see the infrastructure and how the building where built. Take
note of the red bricks and the flowerbeds on high windows.
