Madikwe Game Reserve was proclaimed in 1991 and completed the Operation Phoenix in 1997 with over 8000 animals residing in the game reserve. Madikwe Game Reserve is located North West of South Africa and bordering Botswana, and only 3 hours away from Pretoria and Johannesburg. Madikwe Game Reserve is the third largest reserve in South Africa and it is home to renowned wild dogs and an abundance of wildlife including Africa's Big5 and bird species. The reserve is a malaria-free safari destination with vast grassland and woodlands, rocky hills, and mountains. Madikwe prides itself on endangered wild dog population progress due to human trespassing and other diseases passed by the domestic canine dogs. The reserve was home to for people a thousand years ago and the region was traversed by hunters and farmers.
