# How Many Days Do You Need for an African Safari?

*The honest answer, from a long weekend to three weeks, and how to get the most from every day.*

*Published: 2026-10-25*

> **Quick answer:** Three nights in one reserve is the practical minimum. Five to seven nights in one or two areas is the sweet spot for most people. For two destinations, allow seven to ten nights; for three, ten to fourteen. Add at least two nights if you want gorillas in Uganda. Count travel days separately: a day spent getting between places is not a safari day.

This is one of the first questions we discuss with every client, and the answer shapes everything else: which parks, how many flights, how much it costs. Too short and the trip becomes a series of airports. Too spread out and you never settle in. Here is how we think about it.

## Recommended Safari Lengths

| Trip type | Recommended nights | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Short safari, one reserve | 3 to 4 | Masai Mara, or a private reserve in the Greater Kruger |
| Classic safari, one or two areas | 5 to 7 | Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater; Okavango Delta and Chobe |
| Two destinations | 7 to 10 | Cape Town and Kruger; Nairobi and the Masai Mara |
| Three destinations | 10 to 14 | Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar; Cape Town, Kruger and Victoria Falls |
| Gorillas only, Rwanda | 2 to 4 | Kigali and Volcanoes National Park |
| Gorillas and wildlife, Uganda | 7 to 10 | Bwindi, Kibale and Queen Elizabeth |
| Grand safari | 14 to 21 | Kenya and Tanzania; Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia |

## The Minimum: Three Nights

Three nights in a single reserve is the practical minimum. On arrival day you will usually have an afternoon drive; on departure day, a morning drive. A three-night stay gives you two full days in the middle, with four or five drives where you are not watching the clock.

Shorter stays are possible, and sometimes they make sense, but with fewer than three nights you spend more time in transit than on game drives. If you only have a long weekend, choose one reserve close to an airport, such as a private reserve near Kruger or the Masai Mara with a short flight from Nairobi, and do not try to fit in anything else.

> **package mara-classic:** Four nights in the Masai Mara with a short flight from Nairobi, from US$3,200 per person.

## The Sweet Spot: Five to Seven Nights

For most first safaris, five to seven nights in one or two areas works best. That is enough time to settle into the rhythm, try different drive times, take a bush walk, and have at least one full, unhurried day out with a packed lunch, following whatever the bush offers.

Two camps in different habitats is often better than one. In Botswana, three nights in the [Okavango Delta](/destinations/okavango-delta/) and three at [Chobe](/destinations/chobe-national-park/) gives you water and dry land. In Tanzania, the [Serengeti](/destinations/serengeti-national-park/) and the [Ngorongoro Crater](/destinations/ngorongoro-crater/) are a natural pair.

## Two Destinations: Seven to Ten Nights

Many travellers want to see more than the bush. The classic two-stop trip in South Africa is [Cape Town](/destinations/cape-town/) and [Kruger](/destinations/kruger-national-park/): three or four nights in each, linked by a two-hour flight. In Kenya, a night in Nairobi followed by four in the [Masai Mara](/destinations/masai-mara/) is easy and efficient.

The rule we always apply: allow a full travel day between destinations that does not count as a safari night. Flights connect through hubs, bush planes leave at set times and transfers take longer than they look on a map.

> **package kruger-classic:** Four nights in the Greater Kruger, an easy pairing with Cape Town, from US$1,850 per person.

## Three Destinations: Ten to Fourteen Nights

With ten nights or more, you can combine three areas without rushing. Two routes we plan often:

- **Tanzania:** Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and a few days on Zanzibar.
- **Southern Africa:** Cape Town, Kruger and Victoria Falls, routed through Johannesburg. Our [Cape Town, Kruger and Victoria Falls](/destinations/cape-town-kruger-victoria-falls/) page sets out how the nights divide.

Going beyond three stops in two weeks is where we start to push back gently. Every move costs half a day.

## Adding Gorillas

Gorilla trekking needs its own time. In Rwanda, [Volcanoes National Park](/destinations/volcanoes-national-park/) is about two to three hours by road from Kigali, so a short trip of two to four nights works, or an add-on to an East African safari.

Uganda’s [Bwindi](/destinations/bwindi-impenetrable-national-park/) is further from Entebbe. Allow at least two extra nights for travel by road or light aircraft. Uganda rewards a longer stay, though: chimpanzees in [Kibale](/destinations/kibale-national-park/) and savannah game in Queen Elizabeth make a full seven- to ten-night trip. Our [gorilla trekking](/safari-experiences/gorilla-trekking/) and [Uganda and Rwanda gorilla safari](/destinations/uganda-and-rwanda-gorilla-safari/) pages compare the options.

## What a Safari Day Actually Looks Like

People are often surprised by how full the days are. A typical day at a lodge runs like this:

- **Before dawn:** a wake-up call with coffee or tea, and something light to eat.
- **6am to 9.30am:** morning game drive, the best time for predators and soft light.
- **Late morning:** brunch back at camp.
- **10am to 3pm:** rest, swim, read, or take a guided bush walk. Animals rest in the heat, and so should you.
- **3.30pm:** afternoon tea.
- **3.30pm to 6.30pm:** afternoon drive, with a drink as the sun goes down.
- **Evening:** dinner, often outdoors, sometimes followed by a night drive in private reserves.

That rhythm is why safaris feel restful and tiring at the same time, and why stays of fewer than three nights feel rushed.

## Why More Nights Are Worth It

It is tempting to think that after a few days you will have "seen everything". In our experience, the opposite is true. The bush is different every day: a kill overnight changes where the lions are, a herd arrives at the river, the leopard you missed finally shows. Your guide learns what you want to see and how you like to spend your time.

A week in one camp is a different experience from three nights. You stop rushing to tick things off, start noticing smaller things, and come home having really been somewhere.

> The commonest regret we hear is not "we spent too long on safari". It is "we wish we had stayed a few more nights".

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is a 2-night safari worth it?

It can be if you are already nearby, for example adding two nights in a private reserve near Kruger to a business trip in Johannesburg. But with travel on arrival and departure, two nights usually gives you only three or four game drives. Three nights gives you a full day in the middle with no travel at all, which makes a big difference.

### How many days do you need in the Masai Mara?

Three to four nights is ideal for most visitors. It gives time for a full day out with a picnic, a balloon flight if you want one and enough drives to see the reserve’s different areas. During the migration, four nights improves your chances of seeing a river crossing, which can take days of waiting.

### How many days do you need in Kruger?

Three to four nights in a private reserve in the Greater Kruger is enough to see the Big Five in most seasons. Self-drivers exploring the national park itself often spend five to seven nights, moving between two or three rest camps from south to north.

### How long should a safari with gorilla trekking be?

In Rwanda, you can trek with gorillas on a short trip of two or three nights, as Volcanoes National Park is about two to three hours by road from Kigali. In Uganda, Bwindi is further from the main airport at Entebbe, so allow at least two extra nights for travel. A Uganda trip combining gorillas, chimpanzees and savannah wildlife is usually seven to ten nights.

### Is 10 days too long for a safari?

Not at all. Ten days lets you combine two or three areas without rushing, or spend a long stretch in one place and get to know it properly. Many of our clients say the second half of a long safari was better than the first, because they had settled into the rhythm and the guides knew what they wanted to see.

### Should I add a beach stay after my safari?

If you have the time, yes. Safari days start early and are surprisingly tiring. Three or four nights on Zanzibar, the Kenyan coast, Mozambique or in Cape Town gives you time to rest before the flight home. Most beach extensions add four to five nights including travel.
