# Cape Town to the Garden Route: 3, 5 and 7-Day Itineraries and What They Cost

*The route we drive with guests, day by day, with honest driving times, the park fees for 2026/27, and when a guided tour beats a self-drive.*

*Published: 2026-11-06*

> **Quick answer:** Three days gives you a taste of the Garden Route, five days is a comfortable balance, and seven days is the sweet spot if you want Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma without rushing. The drive from Cape Town to Mossel Bay, where the route begins, takes about four to four and a half hours. Budget R320 per adult for the Cango Caves Heritage Tour and R422 for an international adult at Tsitsikamma's Storms River Mouth. Our private four-day guided tour from Cape Town starts at about US$2,149 per person, and self-drive holidays from US$1,450 per person.

The Garden Route has a way of slowing people down. You leave Cape Town with a plan and a list, and somewhere around Wilderness, with the lakes on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other, the list starts to matter a lot less.

It is a stretch of about two hundred kilometres between Mossel Bay and the Storms River, with lagoons, forests, beaches and mountain passes, and it is the most popular road trip in South Africa for good reason. Here is how we put it together for guests, depending on how many days you have.

> **How we quote prices:** Tour and package prices are per person in US dollars from our live booking system and published rates. Park and attraction fees are in rand for the 2026/27 season at the time of writing.

## The 3-Day Garden Route

Three days is tight, so we take the long drive out of the equation. Fly from Cape Town to George, pick up a car or meet your guide, and base yourself in Knysna.

**Day 1: George to Knysna.** Drive the short stretch past Wilderness and the lakes, then a sunset over the Knysna Heads with oysters in hand.

**Day 2: Tsitsikamma.** Walk to the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth, where the river meets the ocean between cliffs, and stop at the Bloukrans Bridge on the way back to watch the bungy jumpers.

**Day 3: Plettenberg Bay and Robberg.** A morning on the Robberg peninsula, with seals below the cliffs, then back to George for an afternoon flight.

## The 5-Day Garden Route

Five days lets you drive from Cape Town and still enjoy it.

**Day 1: Cape Town to Mossel Bay.** Four hours along the N2 past the wheat fields of the Overberg. If you want wildlife, this is where you turn off for a Big Five reserve.

**Day 2: Mossel Bay to Knysna.** Through George and over the Kaaimans River into Wilderness, then on to the Knysna lagoon for a sunset cruise.

**Day 3: Knysna.** The Heads, the forest where the last few Knysna elephants are said to roam, and Thesen Island for lunch.

**Day 4: Tsitsikamma and Plettenberg Bay.** Storms River Mouth in the morning, the beaches of Plett in the afternoon.

**Day 5: Back to Cape Town or fly from George.** Six and a half hours on the road, or a short flight.

> **package garden-route-classic:** Five nights self-driving from George to Knysna, Tsitsikamma and Plettenberg Bay, staying in a converted power station on Thesen Island, from US$1,450 per person.

## The 7-Day Garden Route: Our Favourite

A week gives you the coast and the Little Karoo, and time to actually sit on a beach.

**Day 1: Cape Town to Oudtshoorn via Route 62.** Through the Breede River valley and the wine town of Montagu, then into the wide, dry Little Karoo. Slower than the N2 and far more beautiful.

**Day 2: Oudtshoorn.** The Cango Caves in the morning, where the Heritage Tour takes about an hour through enormous lit chambers. Then ostrich country, once the centre of a feather boom that built the sandstone "feather palaces" you see in town.

**Day 3: Over the Outeniqua Pass to Wilderness.** One of the great mountain passes of the Cape, dropping down to the lakes and the sea.

**Day 4: Knysna.** The Heads, the lagoon and the forests.

**Day 5: Tsitsikamma.** The suspension bridge, the coastal trails and the gorge.

**Day 6: Plettenberg Bay and Robberg.** The full Robberg circuit takes around four hours. Shorter loops are just as lovely.

**Day 7: Fly home from George or drive back to Cape Town.**

## The Guided Way: Four Days from Cape Town

Not everyone wants to drive on the left for a week, and not everyone has seven days. Our private guided tour leaves Cape Town and covers the highlights in four days and three nights, staying in four-star hotels with breakfast. Expect a game reserve near Mossel Bay, the Cango Caves and Oudtshoorn, the Storms River suspension bridge and the lagoon at Knysna. You finish back in Cape Town or at George airport.

> Four days with a private guide, three nights in four-star hotels, a game reserve, the Cango Caves, Storms River and Knysna. [Book this day tour](/destinations/cape-town/#day-tours)

## Adding a Safari

The Garden Route has its own malaria-free Big Five. Gondwana Game Reserve, in the hills above Mossel Bay, mixes classic safari animals with the fynbos landscapes you only find in the Cape. If you are coming from Cape Town and wondering whether to do a day trip safari instead, our guide to a [Big Five safari from Cape Town](/blogs/big-five-safari-from-cape-town/) compares the options.

> **package garden-route-premium:** Three nights of Big Five drives at Gondwana, then three nights on the Knysna lagoon with forest excursions and Robberg, from US$2,900 per person.

## When to Go

Summer, from December to February, is warm, lively and busy, especially over the school holidays, so book early. Autumn is our favourite time, with settled weather and quieter roads. Winter is cooler and greener, prices drop, and from about June the whales start to appear along the coast, particularly in Plettenberg Bay.

## Putting It All Together

Most of our guests do the Garden Route as part of a bigger South Africa trip, with Cape Town at one end. You can see the whole region and our lodges on the [Garden Route page](/destinations/garden-route/), and all our day tours around the city on the [Cape Town page](/destinations/cape-town/).

> **package south-africa-exclusive:** Twelve nights with the Sabi Sands, the Garden Route and Cape Town, from US$11,500 per person.

Take the long way. On the Garden Route, it is almost always the right one.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How many days do you need for the Garden Route?

Seven is ideal. Five works well if you skip Oudtshoorn or fly one way. Three is possible but means a lot of driving, so we usually suggest flying into George and driving back to Cape Town, or doing our four-day guided tour.

### How long is the drive from Cape Town to the Garden Route?

Cape Town to Mossel Bay is roughly four to four and a half hours on the N2. Knysna is about six hours and Plettenberg Bay six and a half without stops. Route 62 through the Little Karoo to Oudtshoorn is slower but far more scenic.

### Is it better to self-drive or take a guided tour?

Self-drive suits confident drivers who like freedom and is the better value for longer trips. A guided tour is easier if you are short of time, not comfortable driving on the left, or want someone else to handle the logistics, the stories and the restaurant bookings.

### What is the best time to visit the Garden Route?

It is a year-round destination. December to February is summer, warm and busy, with higher prices. March to May has settled weather and fewer people. Winter is cooler and greener with the lowest prices, and from roughly June to November you may see whales from the coast.

### Can you see the Big Five on the Garden Route?

Yes. Malaria-free private reserves such as Gondwana, near Mossel Bay, have the Big Five in fynbos country. Our Gondwana and Knysna holiday combines three nights of game drives with three nights on the coast.

### Should I fly back from George or drive back?

If time is short, fly. George has regular flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg, and a one-way car hire or our guided tour can end at the airport. If you have a spare day, drive back through the Little Karoo on Route 62 for a completely different landscape.
