# Cape Point and Boulders Penguins Tour: Prices, Routes and How to Choose

*Half day or full day, private or small group, and what the park fees really add up to in 2026/27. An honest guide to the Cape Peninsula day from the team that drives it every week.*

*Published: 2026-11-06*

> **Quick answer:** A full-day Cape Point and penguins tour takes eight to nine hours and covers Chapman's Peak, the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point and Boulders Beach. Small group seats start around US$55 per person and private days from about US$150 per person. In most cases, ours included, the park fees are paid on the day by card: R592 for an international adult at Cape Point and R282 at Boulders from November 2026. If you only have a morning, a six-hour half day still fits in the penguins and the Cape, but you lose the long lunch and the slow coastal drive.

Ask anyone who has lived in Cape Town for a while which day they would give a first-time visitor, and most of them will say the peninsula. Not because of one big sight, but because of how the whole day fits together. The Atlantic on one side, False Bay on the other, a mountain spine running down the middle, and at the end of it a lighthouse on a cliff with nothing but ocean until Antarctica.

We drive this road most days of the week, so this guide is the version we would give a friend. What the day actually looks like, what it costs once the fees are added, and how to choose between the tours on offer.

> **How we quote prices:** Tour prices are per person in US dollars from our live booking system at the time of writing. Park fees are set by SANParks in rand, change every November and are paid at the gate by card.

## What a Cape Point and Penguins Day Looks Like

Most full-day tours follow the same loop, and for good reason. We collect you from your hotel in the City Bowl, the Waterfront or along the Atlantic Seaboard at around eight, then head south through Camps Bay with the Twelve Apostles above you.

**Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak.** The drive over Chapman's Peak is nine kilometres of road cut into the cliff, and it is the moment people stop talking. We pull over at the viewpoints, not just one. On some tours there is an optional boat trip out of Hout Bay to see the seals, which adds about an hour.

**The Cape of Good Hope.** Inside Table Mountain National Park the road runs through low fynbos where you may see ostrich, eland, bontebok and the odd tortoise crossing. The famous sign sits on the beach at the Cape of Good Hope, and the walk up to the old 1860 lighthouse at Cape Point is short but steep. The funicular saves your legs for a small extra charge.

**Lunch.** Simon's Town or Kalk Bay, depending on the day. Fish and chips by the harbour is the classic, and it is hard to beat.

**Boulders Beach.** The colony began with a couple of breeding pairs in the early 1980s and is now home to a few thousand African penguins. Raised boardwalks bring you very close without disturbing them. In late 2024 the species was listed as Critically Endangered, so time here matters more than it used to, and part of your entrance fee goes into protecting it.

We come home along False Bay through Muizenberg, past the coloured bathing boxes, and drop you back in the late afternoon.

## What It Really Costs in 2026/27

This is where tours that look cheap online can end up costing the same as the ones that look expensive. Almost every peninsula tour in Cape Town, ours included, lists a price before park fees. So the honest number is the tour plus the fees plus lunch.

| Item | International adult | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cape of Good Hope entry | R592 | From 1 Nov 2026 to 31 Oct 2027, card only |
| Boulders Beach entry | R282 | Card only |
| Cape Point funicular | Extra, optional | Return or one way, paid on site |
| Lunch | About R200 to R450 | Harbour fish and chips to a sit-down restaurant |
| Small group tour | From US$55 | Hotel pickup and guide included |
| Private tour | From US$150 | Your own guide and vehicle |

South African residents pay R115 at the Cape of Good Hope and SADC nationals R242, so bring your ID or passport. Children pay reduced rates at both gates.

## Half Day or Full Day?

A half day is about six hours and focuses on the essentials: the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point and the penguins. It suits cruise passengers, people with a flight that evening, or anyone squeezing the peninsula in alongside another tour.

A full day is eight to nine hours and gives you the coastline in both directions, Chapman's Peak at a proper pace, time at the lighthouse, a real lunch and longer with the penguins. If you are in Cape Town for four days or more and this is your only trip down the peninsula, we would always nudge you towards the full day.

> Short on time? Six hours with the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point and the Boulders penguins, back in town by mid-afternoon. [Book this day tour](/destinations/cape-town/#day-tours)

## Private or Small Group?

**Small group** suits solo travellers and couples. You share a comfortable vehicle with a handful of others, the guide sets the timing, and the price per seat is low.

**Private** means your own guide and vehicle. You choose when to leave, where to stop, how long to stay at Boulders and where to eat. For families with young children, keen photographers or anyone with mobility needs, it is worth every rand. And for a group of four, the price per person gets close to a shared seat.

## Adding Table Mountain to the Same Day

If you are short on days, you can start with the cable car and then head south. It works best on a clear, calm morning, and the cableway is weather dependent, so a good guide keeps a plan B. The day runs to about nine hours. For more on tickets and timing, our [Robben Island and Table Mountain guide](/blogs/robben-island-table-mountain-tours/) covers the mountain in detail.

## A Few Things We Tell Every Guest

- **Wind matters more than rain.** In summer the southeaster can be fierce at Cape Point. Bring a windproof layer even on a hot day.
- **Leave the baboons alone.** Keep food out of sight and car windows closed. They are quick and they know what a shopping bag means.
- **Morning is calmer at Boulders.** Tour buses peak around midday. If you travel private, we can go early.
- **Bring a card.** Both park gates are cashless.
- **Sunscreen and water.** The Cape sun is strong even when the wind makes it feel cool.

## Where the Peninsula Fits in Your Trip

The peninsula pairs beautifully with a slower day in the vineyards. Our guide to [Cape Winelands wine tours](/blogs/cape-winelands-wine-tours-guide/) covers Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and the wine tram. If you want the full picture of what to do in the city, start with our [Cape Town destination page](/destinations/cape-town/), where every one of our day tours is bookable.

> **package cape-town-classic:** Four nights in a Stellenbosch guesthouse with the Table Mountain cableway, a guided peninsula day to Cape Point and tastings at three estates, from US$1,200 per person.

Whichever tour you choose, the penguins will win the day. They always do.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does a Cape Point and penguins tour cost?

Across Cape Town, shared tours run from roughly R480 to R1,650 per person and private tours from around R2,900 to R5,400 per person, depending on group size and what is included. Our small group full day starts at about US$55 per person and our private full day at US$150 per person. On top of that you pay the park fees, which for an international adult come to R592 at the Cape of Good Hope and R282 at Boulders Beach from 1 November 2026.

### Are park entrance fees included?

Usually not, and that is true of most peninsula tours in Cape Town, so compare like with like. Both gates are cashless, so bring a bank card. South African residents and SADC passport holders pay much lower conservation fees, so mention your nationality when you book and we will tell you exactly what to budget.

### Is a half-day tour enough?

It is enough to see the penguins and stand at the Cape of Good Hope. It is not enough to enjoy Chapman's Peak at a gentle pace, walk up to the old lighthouse and sit down for lunch in Kalk Bay or Simon's Town. If this is your only day on the peninsula, take the full day.

### Private or small group: which is better value?

For one or two people, a small group seat is the cheapest way to do it well. Once you are three or four travelling together, a private day often costs only a little more per person, and you choose the pace, the lunch stop and how long you stay with the penguins.

### When is the best time of year for the peninsula?

Any month works. Summer, from November to March, brings long light and the strong southeasterly wind, so mornings are often calmer. Winter is greener, quieter and can be wet, but a clear winter day at Cape Point is spectacular. Penguins are at Boulders all year.

### Can we combine Cape Point with Table Mountain?

Yes. We run a full day that starts with the cable car, if the weather allows, and then heads down the peninsula. It is a long and very rewarding day. If the cableway is closed for wind, we swap the order or use the time for Kirstenbosch instead.
