# The Best African Safari for Couples and Honeymoons

*Plunge pools above waterholes, dinners by lantern light and the beach to finish. Where we would send you as a couple, what it really costs, and six romantic journeys from US$2,400 per person.*

> **Quick answer:** For most couples, the best honeymoon safari is a private reserve in South Africa's Sabi Sands followed by a few days on a beach in Zanzibar, Mozambique or the Seychelles. You get superb wildlife from a suite with its own plunge pool, a private vehicle, bush dinners for two and then complete rest by the sea. If you want something wilder and more remote, Botswana's Okavango Delta is the most romantic place in Africa. Allow seven to ten nights, and book six to nine months ahead for the best suites.

A couple came back from their honeymoon last year and told us the moment they remembered most was not the leopard, or the lion cubs, or even the bush dinner. It was an ordinary evening on their deck, sitting in the plunge pool with a glass of wine while a herd of elephant came down to drink at the waterhole below. Nobody else was there. Nobody said anything for twenty minutes.

That is what a safari does for two people. It slows everything down, takes your phones away for a while and gives you something extraordinary to share every single day. After the noise of a wedding, very little feels quite so good.

So here is where we would send you, depending on what kind of couple you are.

> **How we quote prices:** Prices are per person sharing, in US dollars, from our published rates at the time of writing. Rates change with the season, so we confirm everything when we quote.

## What Makes a Safari Romantic

It is not rose petals on the bed, although you will probably get those too. The things that genuinely make a safari feel like a honeymoon are quieter than that.

**Privacy.** A suite set apart from the main lodge, ideally with its own plunge pool and a view over water, so you can watch wildlife without leaving your deck. **Your own vehicle.** Sharing a game drive with other guests is perfectly pleasant, but having a guide and vehicle to yourselves means you can linger, leave, stop for a drink or simply sit in silence. **Time.** Three or four nights in one place is better than five lodges in a week, because the days settle into a rhythm and you stop watching the clock.

And then there are the moments a good lodge creates for you. A table set up in a dry riverbed by lantern light. Sundowners on a hill with nobody else in sight. A couples' massage on the deck in the heat of the afternoon. We ask for these on your behalf, and we always tell the lodge you are on honeymoon. It makes a difference.

## The Sabi Sands: Our First Choice for Most Couples

If we had to choose one place for a honeymoon safari, it would be the [Sabi Sands](/destinations/sabi-sands/). It sits on the unfenced western edge of the Kruger National Park, the lodges are among the most beautiful in Africa, and the leopards here are so relaxed around vehicles that you can sit with one for an hour at a few metres. Lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino share the reserve, and most couples see the Big Five over three or four nights.

The other great advantage is how easy it is. Flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town take about an hour, so it pairs beautifully with the Cape or a beach, and you lose very little of your honeymoon to travel.

You do not need to spend a fortune here to have something special. A family-run lodge with plunge-pool suites gives you the same leopards and the same bush as the famous names, for considerably less.

> **package sabi-sands-classic:** Three nights at Savanna Private Game Reserve, in a suite with its own plunge pool, with off-road tracking alongside a ranger and tracker, from US$2,400 per person.

And if you want us to take care of every romantic detail, this is the journey we designed for exactly that: a private vehicle and guide for just the two of you, a bush dinner by lantern light, a spa treatment each day and a full day out in the reserve with champagne brunch on a rock above the river.

> **package honeymoon-safari-classic:** Five nights at Savanna Private Game Lodge with a private vehicle and guide, a lantern-lit bush dinner and daily in-suite spa treatments, from US$5,500 per person.

## The Okavango Delta: For Couples Who Want to Disappear

If the Sabi Sands is the classic choice, the [Okavango Delta](/destinations/okavango-delta/) is the dreamy one. There are no roads in, only light aircraft, and the view as you fly over the channels and palm islands for the first time is one of those moments you will both remember.

What makes the delta so romantic is the quiet. Camps are small and spread over huge private concessions, so you might not see another vehicle all day. And you do not only explore by vehicle. Gliding through the papyrus in a mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe, with nothing but the sound of the pole in the water and the reed frogs piping, is about as peaceful as life gets.

It costs more than South Africa, because Botswana deliberately keeps visitor numbers low. For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, we think it is worth every cent.

> **package okavango-premium:** Five nights at Xigera, raised suites on boardwalks over the floodplains in the Moremi Game Reserve, with mokoro, boating and game drives, from US$6,500 per person.

## Victoria Falls: A Little Drama for Two

[Victoria Falls](/destinations/victoria-falls/) is not really a safari destination on its own, but it is one of the most romantic places in southern Africa. Standing in the spray as the Zambezi falls more than a hundred metres into the gorge, with a rainbow over the edge, tends to leave people holding hands without quite meaning to.

Then there is the sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi, with hippos grunting in the shallows and elephants on the islands, and the option of a helicopter flight over the falls for a view you cannot get any other way. Pair it with a few nights of game drives in Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest park, and you have a beautiful week that is also one of our better-value options for couples.

> **package zimbabwe-classic:** Victoria Falls with a guided tour and a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, then game drives among the elephant herds of Hwange, five nights from US$2,800 per person.

## The Masai Mara: Romance on the Grand Scale

For couples who have always pictured the endless golden plains of the films, it has to be the [Masai Mara](/destinations/masai-mara/). From about July to October, the migration herds fill the plains and gather at the river, and the big cats are never far away.

The Mara also gives you what might be the most romantic morning in Africa: a hot-air balloon lifting off in the half-light, drifting silently over the plains as the sun comes up, then landing for a champagne breakfast out in the grass. We would book it for almost every honeymoon couple who goes to Kenya. Our [luxury safari guide](/blogs/best-luxury-african-safari/) has the full details of our balloon journey, and a lodge on the Oloololo Escarpment, with the whole Mara Triangle spread out below your room, is about as good a view as you will find anywhere. The same dawn flights run over the Serengeti in Tanzania, too.

## Safari and Beach: The Honeymoon Almost Everyone Chooses

Here is something we have learned: the vast majority of honeymoon couples end on a beach, and almost none of them regret it. After four or five days of dawn drives, a few days of warm water, long lunches and absolutely nothing to do is exactly what you need. It also gives the trip a lovely shape. Adventure first, rest after.

**Zanzibar** is the easiest from East Africa and very doable from South Africa, with white beaches, warm water for snorkelling, the old alleys of Stone Town and sunset cruises on a traditional dhow. **The Seychelles** is the most beautiful and the most expensive, with granite boulders, turquoise water and small islands with only a handful of villas. **Mozambique** sits in between, with quiet islands off the coast and some of the best snorkelling and diving in the region. Our [beach and bush safari](/safari-experiences/beach-and-bush-safari/) page has more combinations.

> **package beach-and-bush-safari-premium:** Five nights of leopards and lions in the Sabi Sands, then five nights on a private Seychelles island with just sixteen villas, from US$6,500 per person.

And for couples who want the full fairy tale, this is our most romantic journey of all: a riverside boulder lodge on the Sand River with your own vehicle and guide, a helicopter drop to a granite hilltop for a picnic with nobody else around, and four nights in a private villa on Zanzibar with a butler who seems to know what you want before you do.

> **package honeymoon-safari-exclusive:** Five nights at Sand River Boulders Lodge with a private vehicle, a helicopter bush picnic, then four nights in a private Zanzibar villa, from US$9,500 per person.

## What a Honeymoon Safari Costs

Here are our six couples' journeys side by side. Prices are per person sharing.

| Journey | Nights | From |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sabi Sands Leopard Classic | 3 | US$2,400 pp |
| Victoria Falls & Hwange Classic | 5 | US$2,800 pp |
| Sabi Sands Honeymoon Safari | 5 | US$5,500 pp |
| Xigera Delta Premium, Okavango | 5 | US$6,500 pp |
| Sabi Sands & Seychelles Escape | 10 | US$6,500 pp |
| Sabi Sands & Zanzibar Honeymoon Journey | 9 | US$9,500 pp |

Most safari lodges include meals, local drinks, two activities a day and conservation fees. What usually sits on top is international flights, premium wines, extra spa treatments and gratuities. The best way to stretch your budget is timing. The same suite can cost noticeably less in May or November than in August, and the wildlife is still very good. Our [African safari cost guide](/blogs/african-safari-cost-guide/) breaks the numbers down further.

## A Few Things We Tell Every Couple

**Book early.** The suites couples want most, the ones with a plunge pool and a waterhole view, are often the first to go. For July to October, six to nine months ahead is sensible, and a year for the most popular lodges.

**Do not try to see everything.** It is tempting to fit in four countries. Please do not. Two areas and a beach is plenty for ten days, and you will enjoy it far more. Our guide to [how many days you need on safari](/blogs/how-many-days-for-an-african-safari/) explains why.

**Tell everyone it is your honeymoon.** We will tell the lodges, but mention it again when you arrive. Small surprises tend to follow.

**Leave room for nothing.** The best moments on a honeymoon safari are often unplanned: a lazy afternoon on the deck, a long dinner under the stars, a sighting on the way back to camp that nobody expected. Do not fill every hour.

**Think about the anniversary trip.** Many of our honeymoon couples come back for a big anniversary, sometimes to the same lodge. It is a lovely tradition, and the guides often remember them.

> A honeymoon safari is not about seeing everything. It is about the two of you, a quiet deck and an elephant that did not mind you watching.

## Plan It with Us

Tell us your wedding date, how long you have and what you are both dreaming of, whether that is leopards, a mokoro at sunset or a hammock over the Indian Ocean. We will suggest the lodges we would choose ourselves, ask about honeymoon extras on your behalf and keep the whole thing as relaxed as it should be.

If you are celebrating an anniversary or a milestone rather than a wedding, everything here applies just the same. Our [honeymoon safari](/safari-experiences/honeymoon-safari/) page has more ideas, and our guide to [the best African safari tours](/blogs/best-african-safari-tours/) covers every style and budget.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Where is the best place in Africa for a honeymoon safari?

The Sabi Sands in South Africa is the most popular choice, and with good reason: superb leopard viewing, beautiful lodges with private plunge pools and easy flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Botswana's Okavango Delta is more remote and, for many couples, more romantic. Kenya's Masai Mara is wonderful in migration season, and Victoria Falls adds a touch of drama to any trip.

### How much does a honeymoon safari cost?

Our couples' journeys start at US$2,400 per person sharing for three nights in the Sabi Sands and run to US$9,500 per person for nine nights across the Sabi Sands and Zanzibar. A week combining a top safari lodge with a beach usually lands between US$6,000 and US$10,000 per person. International flights, gratuities and travel insurance are usually extra.

### Do safari lodges offer honeymoon extras?

Many do. Depending on the lodge, that might be a bottle of sparkling wine on arrival, a private bush dinner, a couples' spa treatment or a room upgrade when one is available. Some lodges also offer a discount for one of you if you travel within six months of the wedding. Policies vary and change each season, so we ask on your behalf when we quote and always mention that you are on honeymoon.

### What is the best time of year for a honeymoon safari?

For southern Africa, May to October is the dry season and the best time for wildlife, with warm days and cool nights by the fire. For Kenya's river crossings, July to October. If you are finishing on a beach, Zanzibar is lovely from June to October and December to February, and the Seychelles works almost all year. Tell us your wedding date and we will tell you where is at its best.

### How many nights should a honeymoon safari be?

We suggest three or four nights on safari, ideally at one lodge, and then four or five nights on a beach. Moving less means more time together and less time packing. If you want two safari areas, such as the Sabi Sands and the Okavango, allow at least seven safari nights before the beach.

### Is a safari romantic or is it too early in the morning?

It is romantic, and yes, the mornings are early. But a dawn drive with a blanket over your knees and a flask of coffee as the bush wakes up is one of the loveliest things you can share. In between drives, the middle of the day is yours: a long lunch, a siesta, the plunge pool. And you can always skip a drive if you would rather stay in.
