# The Best African Safari Tours & Packages: A Practical Guide for 2026/27

*How to find the right safari for your budget, travel style and the wildlife moments that matter most, with packages from US$1,450 to US$22,000 per person.*

> **Quick answer:** The honest answer is that it depends on when you travel, what you want to see and what you want to spend. For the Great Migration river crossings, Kenya’s Masai Mara between July and October is hard to beat. For sheer variety in one trip, with the Big Five, the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar to finish, Tanzania offers the most. For the closest thing to true wilderness without another vehicle in sight, Botswana wins.

Almost everyone who calls us has typed the same few words into a search bar at some point: best African safari. Then they spend a fortnight reading lists that all seem to recommend something different. That is not because the lists are wrong. It is because the best safari for a couple on honeymoon is not the best safari for a family with an eight-year-old, and neither is the best safari for a photographer who wants to sit at a river crossing for six hours.

So rather than a ranked list, this is how we would think it through if you were sitting across the table from us.

> **How we quote prices:** Prices are per person sharing, in US dollars, from our published rates at the time of writing. Park fees and visa costs change, so we confirm everything when we quote.

## What Makes a Safari "the Best"?

Five things decide it, and the first one matters more than people expect. **Time of year** shapes everything: the same camp can be superb in September and half-empty of game in April. **Travel style** comes next. Some people want a different lodge every two nights; others want to unpack once and let the guide take them deeper into one area. Then there are your **wildlife priorities**, whether that is the Big Five, the migration, gorillas or simply as many species as possible. **Budget** is the fourth, and it is worth being honest about early, because it narrows the choice quickly and saves a lot of disappointment. Finally, **group size and age** change the shape of a trip. A family with young children needs malaria-free reserves, shorter drives and lodges that welcome kids, which is why our [family safari](/safari-experiences/family-safari/) page reads very differently from our [Great Migration safari](/safari-experiences/great-migration-safari/) page.

When those five line up, the safari almost plans itself. When one of them is ignored, usually the time of year, even a very expensive trip can feel flat.

## The Big Five and Where to Find Them

Lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino. The term came from hunters who rated them the most dangerous animals to track on foot, and it has stuck as the benchmark for a first safari. They are not equally easy to see, though.

Leopard is the one people miss. The private reserves of the Greater Kruger, especially the Sabi Sands and the Timbavati, are the best places in Africa to see one well, because the guides can follow a cat off-road and the leopards there have grown used to vehicles over decades. Lion are reliable in the same reserves, and in the Serengeti and the Masai Mara.

For sheer density, the [Ngorongoro Crater](/destinations/ngorongoro-crater/) is hard to match. Its floor holds lion, buffalo, elephant and one of the few black rhino populations you can realistically see in East Africa, all within a day’s drive. Rhino are the hardest of the five everywhere now, because of poaching, and good guides will not share their locations openly. For elephant, nothing beats [Amboseli](/destinations/amboseli-national-park/) in Kenya, where big-tusked bulls walk past with Kilimanjaro behind them on a clear morning. Botswana’s Chobe holds tens of thousands more in the dry season.

> **package big-five-safari-budget:** Three nights at a bushcamp in the Timbavati, next to Kruger, with walks and open-vehicle drives, from US$1,450 per person.

## The Great Migration: Africa’s Most Famous Wildlife Event

If one thing drives people to search for the best safari in Africa, it is this. Around a million and a half wildebeest, with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, move in a loop through Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara, following the rain and the grass.

There are two moments most people come for. The first is calving, from late January to February on the short-grass plains around Ndutu in the southern Serengeti, when several hundred thousand calves are born within a few weeks. The predators know it, and the action is constant. Our calving safari there starts at US$2,800 per person.

The second is the river crossings, roughly July to October, in the Masai Mara and the northern Serengeti. Nothing quite prepares you for it. Herds mass on the bank for hours, sometimes a day or more, then one animal jumps and half a million follow. The noise is a low roar of hooves and grunting, the dust hangs over the water, and crocodiles that have waited all year wait no longer. It is chaotic, sometimes brutal, and it is the reason many people come back to Africa.

The [Masai Mara](/destinations/masai-mara/) is smaller and quicker to reach; the [Serengeti](/destinations/serengeti-national-park/) is larger and quieter in the north. Both see crossings on the Mara River.

> **package great-migration-safari-crossing:** Six nights beside the Mara River in peak crossing season, from US$4,200 per person.

## The Best Safari for a First-Time Visitor

If this is your first time in Africa, we usually suggest seven to ten days in South Africa or Kenya. Both have good international flight connections, English is spoken everywhere you will go, the roads and light-aircraft networks are reliable, and the choice of mid-range lodges is wide enough to suit most budgets.

In South Africa, that means a few nights in a private reserve near Kruger, followed by Cape Town and perhaps the Winelands. In Kenya, it means four or five nights in or near the Masai Mara, ideally in a conservancy or on the edge of the Mara Triangle where vehicle numbers are lower.

Tanzania is spectacular, and we send plenty of first-timers there, but it is worth knowing that its park fees are among the highest on the continent and the distances often mean light-aircraft hops between camps. That pushes the cost up, and the trip works best when you have at least a week.

> **package mara-classic:** Four nights beside the Mara Triangle with patient, unhurried game drives, from US$3,200 per person.

## Gorilla Trekking: The Wildest Hour in Africa

This is nothing like a game drive. You set off on foot with a ranger and trackers, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for five, up steep and muddy forest slopes. Then the trackers stop, you put down your bags, and you are a few metres from a family of mountain gorillas. You get one hour with them. People who have spent weeks in the bush tell us it is the most moving hour they have had in Africa.

Permits are the main cost. A Rwanda permit is US$1,500 per person, and a Uganda permit is US$800. Rwanda’s [Volcanoes National Park](/destinations/volcanoes-national-park/) is a short drive from Kigali, which makes it easy to fit into a few days. Uganda’s [Bwindi Impenetrable National Park](/destinations/bwindi-impenetrable-national-park/) takes longer to reach but suits travellers who want more time in the forest and a lower permit fee. Anyone reasonably fit can do it, and porters are available to carry your bag and give you a hand on the steep sections.

> **package gorilla-trekking-rwanda:** Four nights in Rwanda with a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park and time in Kigali, from US$3,200 per person.

## What Does the Best Safari Actually Cost?

Here is a realistic spread from our own published packages. These are per person sharing.

| Style | Example | From |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Budget Big Five | 3 nights, Timbavati (Greater Kruger) | US$1,450 pp |
| Classic Masai Mara | 4 nights, Mara Triangle | US$3,200 pp |
| Migration crossing | 6 nights, Masai Mara | US$4,200 pp |
| Premium South Africa | 10 nights, Sabi Sands and Cape Town | US$6,500 pp |
| Fly-in Botswana | 8 nights, Okavango, Moremi and the salt pans | US$9,800 pp |
| Ultimate luxury | 10 nights, Chobe, Okavango and Selinda | US$22,000 pp |

On top of these, budget for international flights, any park or conservancy fees not already included, visas where you need them, and tips for guides, trackers and camp staff. Gratuities are customary, and we give clear guidance on amounts before you travel. The biggest jumps in price come from fly-in camps, private concessions and the high season, so moving your dates by a few weeks can make a real difference.

> **package south-africa-premium:** Ten nights from a private Sabi Sands lodge to Cape Town and Franschhoek, from US$6,500 per person.

## The Best African Safari Countries Ranked, and Why It Depends

**Kenya** is the fastest to organise and a natural choice for a first safari. Nairobi is well connected, the Masai Mara is less than an hour away by light aircraft, and the migration is there from July to October. The private conservancies are excellent but add to the cost.

**Tanzania** is the most complete safari country in Africa. The Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire together give you an enormous range of wildlife, and Zanzibar is a short flight away. Park fees are higher, and for the Serengeti a fly-in itinerary is close to essential if you want to avoid long days on the road.

**South Africa** has the widest choice of lodges at every price, from family-friendly reserves to some of the finest private camps on the continent. It is the best place to combine a Kruger safari with Cape Town, and travellers coming directly from Europe or North America do not need a yellow fever vaccination.

**Botswana** is where you go for space. Low-volume tourism keeps crowds down, the Okavango Delta offers water safaris by mokoro alongside game drives, and the Chobe riverfront has some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. It is the most expensive per night, but it is genuinely wild.

**Uganda and Rwanda** are about the gorillas and other primates rather than the Big Five. If trekking is high on your list, they are unmissable. If you only want classic game drives, look elsewhere first.

**Namibia** is the best self-drive safari country in Africa, with [Etosha National Park](/destinations/etosha-national-park/) and the dunes of the Namib Desert in one trip. It suits independent travellers who enjoy long roads and big skies.

You can compare all of them on our [destinations page](/destinations/).

> **package botswana-ultimate:** Ten nights across Chobe, the Okavango Delta and the Selinda Reserve, staying at three of Botswana’s finest camps, from US$22,000 per person.

## How to Choose a Safari Operator

The operator matters almost as much as the destination. A few questions will tell you a lot.

Are they based in Africa, or is it a desk in London or New York selling trips they have never done? People who live here know which camp has changed hands, which guide has moved on and which road has washed away after the rains. Do they have a direct relationship with the camps, or are they booking through someone else? That affects both the price and how quickly problems get solved. Can they genuinely tailor the trip, or are you choosing from a fixed menu? And, perhaps most importantly, will they tell you when something does not suit your budget or your timing, even if it means a smaller booking?

Kasi Africa Safari is based in Africa and built by people who live and work on the continent. We would rather tell you that a different month or a different country makes more sense than sell you the wrong trip.

> The best safari is not the most expensive one. It is the one planned around the right month, the right place and the right people.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best African safari destination for first-time visitors?

South Africa or Kenya, for most people. Both have good long-haul flight connections, English is widely spoken and there is a wide choice of mid-range lodges. A week combining a private reserve near Kruger with Cape Town, or four or five nights in the Masai Mara, gives a first-timer superb game viewing without complicated logistics.

### What is the best month to go on an African safari?

For most of southern and East Africa, the dry season from June to October is the best time, because the bush thins out and animals gather at water. Kenya’s river crossings peak from July to October, while Tanzania’s calving season runs from late January to February. Botswana’s Okavango floods are at their highest from June to August.

### How much does the best African safari cost?

Our packages start at US$1,450 per person sharing for three nights in the Timbavati, next to Kruger, and run to US$22,000 for ten nights in Botswana’s top fly-in camps. A classic Masai Mara safari is from US$3,200. International flights, some park fees, visas and tips are usually extra, and we list exactly what is included when we quote.

### What is the best African safari for families?

South Africa is usually the easiest for families, because many malaria-free reserves such as Madikwe and the Eastern Cape take young children, and the flights are long but simple. Kenya also works well for older children. Look for lodges with family rooms, private vehicles and flexible drive times, as children rarely enjoy sitting still for four hours.

### Is it better to book an African safari directly or through a tour operator?

Booking a single lodge directly can work, but most safaris involve several camps, light-aircraft flights, transfers and park fees that have to line up. A good operator handles that, often secures the same or better rates through trade agreements, and is there to sort things out if a flight changes. Choose one based in Africa who knows the camps first-hand.

### What is the best African safari for seeing the Big Five?

A private reserve in the Greater Kruger, such as the Sabi Sands or Timbavati, gives you the best chance of all five in a few days, because guides can drive off-road and track leopard closely. The Ngorongoro Crater is the other strong choice, with black rhino on the crater floor. Most travellers who spend four nights in either see all five.
